Quick answer — diving Timor-Leste, and what it costs

  • A shore dive in Timor-Leste costs $45–60, and a 2-tank boat dive $90 — among the cheapest world-class diving anywhere.
  • Dreamers Dive Academy (Dili) is the country’s most complete training centre: the full SDI ladder from Discover Scuba ($120) to Divemaster ($2,000).
  • Atauro Dive Resort is the best base for boat diving — house-reef shore dives at $45 and a 2-tank morning boat at $90, on the island with the world’s highest recorded reef-fish diversity.
  • To learn to dive, SDI Open Water runs $450 over 3 days in Dili.
  • Snorkellers can join a dive boat from Atauro for $5, the single best-value trip in the country.
  • There is no decompression chamber in Timor-Leste — the nearest is in Darwin, so dive conservatively and carry evacuation insurance.

What diving in Timor-Leste actually costs

There is no published price list for diving in this country. Operators quote by email, forum answers are years out of date, and the dive-travel sites that cover Timor-Leste mostly do not carry rates at all. The table below is every bookable water trip on Rezerva at its operator-set price — updated automatically as they change it, so it cannot go stale the way a blog post does.

Our honest picks

We are based in Dili and we list nearly every operator in the country, so we have no reason to oversell any one of them. Where the honest answer is an operator we cannot book for you, we say so.

Best for training

Dreamers Dive Academy Timor

Discover Scuba $120 · Open Water $450 · 5.0★ Google

The deepest course catalogue in the country — Discover Scuba, Open Water, Adventure, Rescue, Sidemount, Specialty and a full 28-day Divemaster. Dili-based, so you dive the north-coast sites (K41, Dili Rock, Tasi Tolu) between classroom sessions.

Tradeoff: Only 16 Google reviews — a small sample even if every one of them is five stars. It is a Dili operation, so Atauro trips are day trips, not a doorstep.

Best for boat diving

Atauro Dive Resort

Shore $45 · 2-tank boat $90 · 4.6★ from 145 reviews

The established Atauro operation and the most-reviewed dive business in the country. Dive the house reef straight off the beach, or take the 2-tank morning boat out to the wall sites that gave Atauro its reef-fish record.

Tradeoff: You are committing to Atauro — the ferry runs on limited days, so this is a multi-night trip, not an afternoon out of Dili.

Best value snorkelling

Atauro Dive Resort — snorkel the dive boat

$5 per person

Ride the dive boat as a snorkeller and swim the same walls the divers are on. At $5 it is the cheapest way to see the Coral Triangle at its best.

Tradeoff: You are on the divers’ schedule and the divers’ sites — no snorkel-specific briefing or shallow-water hand-holding.

Best all-in package

Island Explorer Holidays

4-Day Atauro Dive Escape $690 · 4.8★

If you would rather not assemble ferries, lodges and dive days yourself, Island Explorer packages the whole Atauro trip — and a 7-day national itinerary that takes in the reefs, the highlands and Baucau.

Tradeoff: You pay for the coordination. Booked piece by piece the same days cost less; you are buying someone else doing the logistics.

Best for a dive-and-sleep base

Dive Timor Lorosae

guesthouse rates · Dili waterfront

The long-running Dili waterfront operation with the shop downstairs and rooms above — roll out of bed onto the boat. The default choice for divers who want one address for the whole trip.

Tradeoff: It is a dive lodge rather than a hotel, and it carries no Google rating on our records — judge it on the diving, not the room.

Best for whales

Tasi Feto Wildlife Expeditions

Full-day whale encounter $340 · Baucau

Not a dive shop — a wildlife boat. Timor-Leste sits on the Wetar Strait migration corridor, and October–December puts blue whales, sperm whales and large dolphin pods within a day’s run.

Tradeoff: Seasonal and weather-dependent, and it is a full-day charter price rather than a per-diver rate. Mysaffy on Atauro runs a cheaper whale-and-dolphin trip if you are already on the island.

Every operator, trip by trip

Ordered by how much they run. Ratings are the operator's own Google rating where one exists — several of these businesses are small enough to have very few reviews, which is a fact about the market, not a mark against them.

Before you book

No chamber in the country

There is no hyperbaric chamber in Timor-Leste. The nearest is Darwin, about 90 minutes by air. Dive conservatively and carry insurance that explicitly covers evacuation.

Atauro runs on the ferry

Departures are not daily. Plan two or three nights on the island rather than a day trip, and book the bed before the dive.

Shore diving is the bargain

The north-coast road gives walk-in access to walls that would be a boat ride anywhere else. Guided shore dives start at $45.

Common questions

How much does diving in Timor-Leste cost?

A single shore dive costs $45 on Atauro and $60 in Dili. A 2-tank morning boat dive is $90. Discover Scuba (no certification needed) is $120, and a full SDI Open Water course is $450 over three days. Snorkellers can join an Atauro dive boat for $5. These are the operators’ own prices as listed on Rezerva, not estimates — most include tanks and weights but not full equipment hire, so confirm what is bundled when you book.

Who is the best dive operator in Timor-Leste?

It depends what you want. For training, Dreamers Dive Academy in Dili has the deepest course catalogue — the full SDI ladder up to Divemaster. For boat diving, Atauro Dive Resort is the established island operation and the most-reviewed dive business in the country (4.6★ from 145 reviews). For a dive-and-sleep base in Dili, Dive Timor Lorosae puts the shop downstairs from the rooms. For a packaged trip, Island Explorer Holidays runs a 4-day Atauro Dive Escape at $690.

Do I need to be certified to dive in Timor-Leste?

No. Discover Scuba Diving ($120 in Dili) takes uncertified divers into the water on the same day after a pool-and-theory briefing, to a limited depth with an instructor. If you want a certification you can use anywhere, SDI Open Water is $450 over three days. Already certified but out of practice? A Refresher / Inactive Diver Program is $120.

Is Atauro Island really the most biodiverse reef in the world?

By one specific measure, yes. A 2016 Conservation International survey recorded an average of 253 reef fish species per site around Atauro — the highest average ever recorded anywhere, with 642 species documented in total. That is an average-per-site record, not a claim that Atauro has more species than anywhere on earth. It is still the reason divers fly here.

When is the best time to dive in Timor-Leste?

The dry season, roughly May to November, gives the best visibility — often 20–30 metres. Diving is possible year-round, but wet-season runoff (December to April) can cut visibility at the Dili shore sites. Whale and dolphin activity in the Wetar Strait peaks October to December. See our best time to visit guide for the month-by-month picture.

Is there a decompression chamber in Timor-Leste?

No. There is no hyperbaric chamber in the country. The nearest facility is in Darwin, Australia, roughly a 90-minute flight from Dili. Every operator here dives conservatively as a result, and you should carry dive insurance that explicitly covers evacuation — DAN or equivalent. This is the single most important practical fact about diving in Timor-Leste.

Can I dive straight from the shore in Dili?

Yes — this is one of the things that makes Timor-Leste unusual. The north coast road east and west of Dili has a string of shore-entry sites, including K41, Dili Rock, Tasi Tolu and the Pertamina Pier, where you walk in from the roadside and drop onto a wall. Operators run these as guided shore dives from $60. See our dive sites guide for the site-by-site detail.

How do I get to Atauro Island for diving?

The APORTIL ferry runs from Dili harbour on limited days, and fast boats run more frequently in the dry season. Because departures are not daily, most divers plan two or three nights on the island rather than a day trip. Our Atauro ferry guide has the current schedule, and our Atauro accommodation roundup covers where to sleep once you land.
