Maubisse — Mountain coffee country. Nestled in the central highlands at 1,526m, Maubisse offers cool mountain air, stunning terraced hillsides, and some of the world's finest organic coffee. The gateway to Mount Ramelau — Timor's highest peak. 3 bookable experiences.
Maubisse sits at 1,526 meters in the Ainaro district of central Timor-Leste. After the heat of Dili, the cool mountain air feels like a different country. Morning temperatures can drop below 15°C, and the hills are perpetually wrapped in mist and green.
The town is small — a main road, markets on Thursday and Sunday, a few guesthouses, and the Pousada de Maubisse, a former Portuguese Governor's retreat perched on a hillside with views across the valley. Note that the Pousada closed in 2024, though the building and its history remain a landmark worth seeing.
Coffee is king here. The famous Timor Hybrid — discovered in the 1940s and prized for its resistance to leaf rust — was first cultivated in these highlands. Starbucks has been the largest buyer of Timorese coffee since 1996. Today, cooperatives like Cocamau and Hakmatek welcome visitors for tours of working farms.
The drive from Dili to Maubisse is an experience in itself — winding mountain roads through terraced rice paddies, traditional villages, and forests of sandalwood and eucalyptus. Buses leave from Taibessi station in Dili. The road quality has improved significantly, making it a comfortable 3-hour drive.
Timor-Leste's highest peak at 2,963m. The standard ascent starts from Hato Builico (the country's highest village at ~1,950m, home to a blue church opened in October 2022) at around 3am. Allow 2.5-3 hours up and 1.5-2 hours down. An alabaster Virgin Mary statue (donated by Italy in 1997) and an open-air chapel mark the summit. Guide services cost around $25. Annual pilgrimages in March and October draw some 25,000 visitors.
Visit a working coffee farm to see the full process — from cherry picking to pulping, fermenting, drying, and roasting. Taste fresh Timor Hybrid at the source. Cooperatives like Cocamau and Hakmatek welcome visitors for immersive tours around Maubisse.
Dokomali Waterfall is arguably the most spectacular in the country — a one-hour walk along a steep 1.3km path. Closer to Maubisse, Ersalibuti Waterfall has a deep pool perfect for a cold-water plunge.
Maubisse's markets on Thursday and Sunday draw villagers from surrounding mountains. Fresh produce, betel nut, tais cloth, and local snacks. It's a genuine, non-touristic market — bring a camera but be respectful.
Nearby Mt Rabilau is a pilgrimage site with a Fatima statue ($1 entry + $2 pilgrimage site). Ulelufa Strawberry Farm — the largest in the nation — offers pick-your-own strawberries, a unique highland experience.
Continue south from Maubisse through Ainaro to the south coast. The road descends dramatically from the highlands to tropical beaches. Combine with a visit to the sacred Ramelau region.
