Dili Airport Transfer — skip the negotiation
Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport is small, friendly, and right on the coast — but the first thing you want to see after a long flight is your name on a driver's sign, not a huddle of unmetered taxis. Pre-book your transfer, pay by card, and arrive knowing exactly what it costs and who is picking you up. From $15 to any hotel in central Dili.
Why pre-book your Dili airport transfer
You can absolutely walk out of arrivals and haggle with a taxi driver. Plenty of people do. But the fare will rarely be lower than pre-booking — and often higher — and the experience after a 14-hour travel day is not the warm welcome Timor-Leste deserves to give you.
Pre-booking solves five things at once. You know the price before you leave home. You pay by card, so you arrive without needing cash. Your flight is tracked — delays do not leave you stranded. A driver waits with your name on a sign, so there is no confusion about who you are or where you are going. And because you are dealing with a verified operator, the vehicle is clean, air-conditioned, and insured.
Taxis do exist at Dili airport, and they are usually honest. But ride-hailing apps do not — no Uber, no Grab, no Gojek. English is limited. Cash is king and ATMs at the airport are unreliable. For a first visit, an overnight arrival, or any trip with more than hand luggage, pre-booking removes every friction point between your flight and your first Timor coffee.
Choose the right vehicle for your arrival
Four options covering every common arrival — from a solo traveler with a carry-on to a dive club landing with a pile of gear. All include driver, fuel, and meet-and-greet service.
Sedan
1-3 passengers, 2-3 bags
Air-conditioned four-door sedan. The standard choice for solo travelers, couples, and small groups arriving with airline-sized luggage. Quickest option to central Dili hotels.
Best for: Airport to central Dili
4WD / SUV
1-5 passengers, 4-5 bags
Toyota Prado, Land Cruiser, or equivalent. More space for luggage and dive gear. The right vehicle if you are heading straight to a beach hotel on the coast road or onward to Baucau the same day.
Best for: Groups, dive gear, onward travel
Minivan
6-8 passengers, 8 bags
Toyota HiAce or similar. For families, dive clubs, and small tour groups. Plenty of room for luggage. Still an easy drive for mostly-sealed Dili roads.
Best for: Families, group arrivals
Transfer + Car Rental
Includes first-day transfer
Skip the taxi entirely. Pick up your rental vehicle at the airport and drive it yourself to your hotel — or have the operator deliver it there. Rental starts the moment you land.
Best for: Self-drive travelers
Transfer times and fares from Dili Airport
Distances are short — the airport is 6 km west of central Dili. But travel times stretch once you head up into Cristo Rei territory or beyond the city. Here is what every common transfer actually costs.
Airport to Central Dili hotels
e.g. Hotel Timor, Novo Turismo, Timor Plaza
The standard transfer. Direct run along the coast road into the city.
Airport to Cristo Rei area
e.g. Beachside Hotel, Areia Branca hotels
East of the city along the coast. Scenic drive past the waterfront and up toward Cristo Rei.
Airport to Tibar / West of Dili
e.g. Tibar mangroves, Liquiçá
West of the airport. Useful if you are heading to a beach retreat or starting a west-coast route.
Airport to Ferry Terminal (Atauro)
e.g. Dili waterfront, Berlin Nakroma ferry
Direct drop-off at the Atauro ferry dock. Time this around the ferry schedule — it does not run daily.
Airport to Baucau (same-day onward)
e.g. Airport → Baucau
Long-distance transfer east on the sealed coast highway. Book a 4WD or sedan with driver. Arrive well before dark.
Airport to Maubisse (same-day onward)
e.g. Airport → Maubisse
Mountain road south into the highlands. 4WD recommended. Dramatic switchbacks — not the ride after a 14-hour flight unless you are ready.
A note on pricing
Prices are indicative ranges in USD, set by the operator running the transfer. They include driver, fuel, airport waiting time, and meet-and-greet. Late-night surcharges (after 10pm) may apply for some routes. Same-day onward transfers to Baucau, Maubisse, or the south coast are priced per-vehicle, not per-person.
Four steps from booking to arrival
Pre-booking a Dili airport transfer through Rezerva takes under five minutes. What happens next is all handled by the operator — they have done this thousands of times.
Send your flight
Book online and share your flight number and arrival time. Pick your vehicle size. That is the whole form.
Get your driver
Within hours you receive a confirmation with your driver's name, phone number, and vehicle type. Save the number in WhatsApp.
Land and walk out
Your driver tracks the flight. Clear immigration, grab your bags, walk out to arrivals. Your name is on a sign by the exit.
Ride in, relax
Air-conditioned car, cold water, 15-25 minutes to your hotel. Optional stops for a SIM card or ATM — just ask.
Practical arrival tips for Dili
Six things worth knowing about arriving at Dili airport — especially if it is your first visit or you are landing outside business hours.
Late or Early Flights
If you land after 10pm or before 6am, pre-booking stops being optional. Walk-up taxis thin out fast. Your driver will be there regardless — tracking your flight and ready to hand you a cold water when you walk out.
Bring Heavy Gear?
Dive tanks, camera rigs, surfboards, or a lot of luggage — mention it when you book. A sedan may not cut it. The operator will send a 4WD or minivan instead for the same pre-booked flat rate.
Pay Before You Land
Pay by card through Rezerva and arrive with nothing to sort out. No negotiating cash fares at 2am. No ATM roulette. Just walk out, meet your driver, and go.
Plan 30 Minutes for Arrival
Immigration, baggage, and customs at Dili airport usually take 20-30 minutes. Your driver will wait. Flights arriving within 60 minutes of each other can sometimes stack up at passport control — tell your operator if you are short on time for an onward flight or ferry.
SIM Card and ATM Detour
The airport has limited reliable ATMs and no SIM card shop. Most drivers will happily stop en route so you can grab a local SIM (around $5) and withdraw cash in central Dili. Ten-minute detour, saves you a separate trip.
Cash Backup
Bring US dollars in small bills — $5, $10, $20. Change is scarce. Even if you pre-pay your transfer, you will want cash for tips, local food stalls, and the mikrolet the next day. Plan for $50-100 in small bills for the first 48 hours.

Dili Airport Transfer — common questions
Everything travelers ask us about airport pickups in Dili, from late flights to local SIM cards.
How much does an airport transfer from Dili Airport cost?
Pre-booked airport transfers in Dili start at $15 for a sedan to a central Dili hotel. A 4WD or larger vehicle runs $25 to $35. Transfers to beach hotels east of the city (Cristo Rei, Areia Branca) range from $25 to $45. Minivans for groups of up to 8 start around $45. Prices include driver, fuel, and meet-and-greet.
Where is Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport?
The airport (code DIL) is 6 km west of central Dili, on the coast. It is the only international airport in Timor-Leste and the arrival point for all flights from Darwin, Bali, Singapore, and elsewhere. Transfer time to central Dili is 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic. Hotels east of the city (Cristo Rei area) are 30 to 45 minutes away.
Can I take a taxi from Dili Airport without booking in advance?
Taxis do wait outside arrivals, but there are a few things to know. Fares are rarely metered and must be negotiated. Expect to pay $10 to $15 for a cash-only ride to central Dili, more if they sense you are new. Few drivers speak much English. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Grab do not operate in Timor-Leste. For a stress-free arrival — especially on a late flight, with luggage, or if it is your first time in Dili — pre-booking is the safer call.
What if my flight is delayed?
Your driver will track your flight. When you book with Rezerva, you share your flight number and arrival time, and the operator monitors the inbound flight. If you are delayed by an hour, two hours, or overnight, they adjust. There is no extra charge for reasonable delays — this is the main reason to pre-book rather than take your chances with a taxi.
Is the airport open 24 hours?
The airport handles flights throughout the day and some late-night arrivals, particularly from Darwin and Bali. Pre-booked transfers run on any schedule you need — 2am, 5am, anytime. Walk-up taxis thin out dramatically after the last scheduled flight, so for late or early arrivals, pre-booking is strongly recommended.
How do I find my driver at Dili Airport?
Your driver will be waiting in the arrivals area with a sign showing your name. Dili airport is small — arrivals is a single open hall — so finding them takes seconds, not minutes. You will receive your driver's name and phone number by email before your flight. If anything goes sideways, you can WhatsApp them directly.
Do I need cash? What currency?
Timor-Leste uses the US Dollar. Most airport transfers can be paid by card through Rezerva when you book, so you arrive with nothing to pay. If you prefer cash on arrival, bring clean US bills — small denominations ($5, $10, $20) are best. Change can be scarce. ATMs exist at the airport but are not always reliable — do not count on them.
Can I book a transfer for more than 4 people?
Yes. Minivans and 4WDs seating up to 8 passengers are available from around $45. For larger groups — dive clubs, tour groups, corporate visitors — operators can coordinate multiple vehicles. Include your group size and luggage in your booking request and the operator will match you to the right vehicle.
