Small island, surprising choice of stays

Atauro sits in the Wetar Strait between Timor-Leste and Indonesia. It is 25 km long, has a central volcanic spine, and holds the richest documented reef fish biodiversity of anywhere on Earth — a 2016 Conservation International survey put it ahead of Raja Ampat. Humpback whales, blue whales, and superpods of dolphins pass through on the annual migration. It is, by any honest measure, a world-class destination that almost nobody visits.

The accommodation reflects that in-between status. There are no international-chain hotels and there never will be. What there is: a handful of small, locally-run places that have built their reputations slowly — Barry's Place, now the island's most-loved eco-lodge. Atauro Dive Resort, the only PADI operation on-island with proper dive infrastructure. Beloi Beach Hotel for AC and hot showers. Compass Eco-Lodge for divers who just want a clean tent near the boat. And the ATKOMA community homestay network, which is how many travelers have their most memorable nights — eating dinner with a weaving family in Makili or hiking between villages with a guide whose grandfather grew up on the same trail.

Below: every stay worth knowing about, grouped by what kind of trip it fits. Prices are in USD and reflect what you actually pay — not marketing rates. Where we have a phone number, it is the number you will actually reach.

Choose by trip type

Which stay fits your trip?

Four common trip types and the accommodation that suits each. Atauro is small enough that you can also mix — a night in a village homestay, then a night at Barry's Place on the way back.

Budget ($15-35)

Village homestays via ATKOMA, or a Compass Eco-Lodge tent. Basic but honest. You will eat the same food as the family or the dive crew, and you will be in the water as much as anyone paying five times more.

Divers ($50-100)

Compass Eco-Lodge for budget divers, Atauro Dive Resort for comfort. Both put you steps from the boat and the house reef. Dive packages with accommodation are the most efficient way to book.

Eco ($60 all-in)

Barry's Place remains the defining Atauro experience — beachfront bungalows, all-inclusive, the house reef every morning. It books out fast in the dry season.

Comfort ($90-150)

Beloi Beach Hotel is the closest the island gets to a standard hotel — AC, en-suites, WiFi. Good for travelers who need a predictable baseline after a few rougher nights elsewhere.

Getting there

Ferry schedule from Dili to Atauro

Three ferries run between Dili and Beloi on Atauro. All depart from the Dili waterfront at 8am. Return ferries leave Beloi in the early afternoon. Schedules shift — confirm the day before at the wharf or with your accommodation.

Berlin Nakroma

Wed / Sat / Sun8:00 AM2.5 hours
~$4

The traditional government ferry. Cheap, reliable, slow. Book the day before at the Dili wharf office. Return leaves Beloi around 2:30-3pm.

Dragon Fast Ferry

Thu / Sat8:00 AM1 hr 15 min
$10 / $12

Air-conditioned, quicker, more comfortable. Economy $10, VIP $12. The best option if you value time over budget.

MV Success

Tue / Fri8:00 AM3 hours
$5

Another budget option. Schedule shifts — confirm the day before at the wharf. Same return pattern (early afternoon).

Book the Nakroma in advance

The Nakroma ferry office at Dili wharf (+670 331 7264) sells tickets the day before. Showing up at 7:30am hoping to board is how people get stranded. If you prefer the Dragon Fast Ferry, you can usually book at the pier on the morning of travel — but seats go, especially on weekends.

Before you go

Practical tips for staying on Atauro

Six things the brochures leave out. Most of these are learned the first night on the island — we have included them so you do not have to learn them that way.

Bring cash

Almost nowhere on Atauro accepts cards. Bring enough US dollars from Dili for the whole trip — accommodation, meals, dives, boat charters, and tips. Small bills ($5, $10, $20) are better than $100s.

Ferry day matters

Only three ferries run on Wed/Sat/Sun — plan around them, not against them. If you miss the return ferry there is no plan B; the next one might be two days away.

Reef shoes, always

Most beach entries on Atauro cross shallow coral. Step on live coral and you damage 50 years of growth — and shred your feet. Reef shoes solve both problems for about $10.

Mobile signal is patchy

Telkomcel and Timor Telecom both work in Beloi. Coverage fades as you move inland or around to the west coast. Tell your family what to expect and do not rely on being contactable 24/7.

Meals are usually included

At Barry's Place and village homestays, meals are part of the deal. At Atauro Dive Resort and Beloi Beach Hotel, meals are separate ($8-15 per meal). Factor this in when comparing nightly rates.

Stay at least two nights

Day trips from Dili are possible but wasteful. With only the afternoon on the island you miss the morning snorkel, the sunrise, the conversation over dinner, and the whole point of the island. Two nights is the minimum that respects the place.

FAQ

Atauro accommodation — common questions

Everything travelers ask about staying on Atauro, from booking windows to WiFi.

How much does accommodation on Atauro Island cost?

Village homestays run $15-20 per night plus meals ($5-8 each). Eco-lodges like Barry's Place are $60 per person all-inclusive with three meals. Dive resorts and hotels range from $70 to $150 per room per night. Most places are cash-only (US dollars) — bring enough from Dili.

Which is the best place to stay on Atauro?

For most first-time visitors, Barry's Place. It is on the beach at Beloi, the meals are good, the house reef is exceptional, and the vibe is exactly what Atauro is known for. If you are a certified diver, Atauro Dive Resort or Compass Eco-Lodge make more sense because diving is baked into the stay. If you want air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms, Beloi Beach Hotel.

How do I get to Atauro Island from Dili?

Three ferry options from Dili waterfront. The Berlin Nakroma (Wed/Sat/Sun, 8am, 2.5 hours, ~$4) is the traditional government ferry — cheap and reliable. The Dragon Fast Ferry (Thu/Sat, 8am, 1 hour 15 min, $10 economy / $12 VIP) is quicker and more comfortable. MV Success runs Tue/Fri. Return ferries leave Beloi around 2:30-3pm. Book the Nakroma the day before at the Dili wharf office (+670 331 7264).

Does Atauro have WiFi and electricity?

Limited and uneven. Atauro Dive Resort and Beloi Beach Hotel have reliable WiFi and 24-hour power. Barry's Place runs on solar — some power, no strong WiFi. Village homestays often have no WiFi at all and limited electricity (evenings only on solar). Mobile data works in Beloi but drops in the mountains. If you need to work from Atauro, stick to Beloi and choose a resort with backup power.

Do I need to book Atauro accommodation in advance?

Yes, especially June to September (peak dry season) and weekends when Dili expats head over. Places are small — Barry's Place has under 10 bungalows, Beloi Beach Hotel has 12 rooms — and they do fill up. Call ahead by at least a week in the dry season. Village homestays can usually be arranged on arrival through ATKOMA, but pre-arranging is safer if you are only on the island a couple of nights.

Can I find places to stay in the mountain villages, not just Beloi?

Yes. ATKOMA (the Atauro community tourism association) coordinates homestays in Makili, Makadade, Biqueli, and other inland villages. These are the most culturally immersive stays on the island — you eat with the family, join them for traditional weaving or walks between villages, sleep in a simple room. Getting there from Beloi usually means a motorbike taxi or arranged pickup. Budget $15-20 per night plus meals.

What should I bring?

Cash in US dollars (small bills, most places do not accept cards), reef shoes (the beach entries are coral), sun protection, insect repellent especially for March flies along the coast, a headtorch for the homestays, and a refillable water bottle. Snorkel gear is worth bringing — you can rent for about $5/day, but having your own mask makes the shore snorkeling more spontaneous.

Is Atauro safe?

Very. Atauro is one of the safest places in Timor-Leste. Crime is rare, the community is tight, and operators watch out for visitors. Real risks are environmental: sun exposure, reef cuts (wear reef shoes), dehydration, and aggressive March flies in the coastal scrub. There is a small health clinic in Beloi but no hospital — anything serious requires evacuation to Dili.

Is there a road around Atauro now?

A new road from Beloi to Adara on the west coast was completed in mid-2025 — it makes the dramatic west coast accessible in about 45 minutes by 4WD or motorbike. Otherwise, the island's other villages are connected by trails and the occasional rough track, and most travel between them is on foot, by boat, or by arranged motorbike taxi.
