Both ferries leave Dili at 08:00 and Beloi at 15:00. No Monday sailing. Tickets are sold for cash at the departure point on the day, so arrive early. (APORTIL ticket office, August 30, 2026)
The boat back from Atauro reaches Dili in the early evening, too late for a same-day flight to Darwin. Plan your last night in Dili.
Getting to Atauro Island is straightforward once you have the ferry schedule, which is the one piece of information travellers say is hardest to find online. Two public ferries run between Dili and Atauro every day except Monday. MV Success sails Tuesday and Friday for $5, and the larger Berlin Nakroma sails Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday for $4. Both leave Dili at 08:00 and depart Beloi, Atauro, at 15:00. The crossing takes about 2 hours 15 minutes on Berlin Nakroma or 3 hours on MV Success.
There is no ferry to Atauro on Monday, and the two boats leave from different places in Dili, so check which one you are on. Tickets are sold in cash at the departure point on the day of travel, with no online booking, so the schedule and a pocket of small US dollar notes are really all you need. This guide covers the current days and fares, which port to use, and how to do Atauro as a day trip or an overnight.
Quick Answer: Dili to Atauro Ferry
- Days: Success sails Tuesday and Friday. Berlin Nakroma sails Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. There is no Monday ferry.
- Times: both ferries leave Dili around 08:00 and return from Atauro around 15:00.
- Fare: $5 each way on Success, $4 each way on Berlin Nakroma, paid in cash at the port.
- Journey: about 2 hours 15 minutes on Berlin Nakroma or 3 hours on MV Success.
- Booking: no online booking. Buy your ticket at the departure point on the day, in US dollars, and arrive about an hour early.
The Current Ferry Schedule
Two vessels cover the Dili to Atauro route. The Success is a roll-on/roll-off passenger and cargo ferry that sails Tuesday and Friday for $5 each way, departing Dili at 08:00 and leaving Atauro at around 15:00. It departs from the Kolmera ticket office and boarding point in central Dili.
The Berlin Nakroma is the larger workhorse ferry, sailing Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday for $4 each way. It also leaves Dili at 08:00 and returns from Atauro at around 15:00, and it carries passengers, motorbikes, and vehicles. It departs from Porto Dili, the main commercial port in the Farol area on the central waterfront.
Between the two, there is a sailing every day except Monday. Schedules can shift for weather, maintenance, or public holidays, so confirm at the port the day before, especially in the wet season (December to April) when crossings are occasionally cancelled.

Which Port, and Buying Tickets
Check which ferry you are taking, because the two use different ports. Berlin Nakroma leaves from Porto Dili in the Farol neighbourhood, while Success leaves from the Kolmera area. Both are on the central Dili waterfront but in different spots, so do not turn up at the wrong one.
There is no online booking. Tickets are sold at the port on the day of travel, in US dollar cash, so bring small notes. Arrive at least an hour before departure, and earlier on weekends and around public holidays when the ferries fill up. The operator is APORTIL, the government ports authority, and the port office is the place to confirm a sailing in advance.
Can You Visit Atauro as a Day Trip?
On paper, yes, on days when a ferry runs both ways. An 08:00 departure and a roughly 15:00 return leaves you only about three to four hours on the island once you account for the crossing, which is enough for a quick look but tight for diving or snorkelling. Most travellers find Atauro is wasted as a rushed day trip.
For the full Atauro experience of reef diving, eco-lodges and village life, plan at least one or two nights. If you stay the night, you come back on the next day's 15:00 boat (there is none on Monday). It reaches Dili in the early evening, too late for a same-day flight to Darwin, so plan your last night in Dili before you fly out.

Day Trip or Overnight?
For most people, an overnight stay beats a day trip. Atauro has simple eco-lodges and guesthouses, exceptional snorkelling and diving straight off the shore, and a slow island pace that rewards staying put. One or two nights lets you dive or snorkel properly and still catch an afternoon ferry home.
A day trip makes sense only if your schedule is fixed and you just want to set foot on the island and see the coast.

Practical Tips
Bring all the cash you need in small US notes. There are no ATMs on Atauro, and ferry tickets and island guesthouses are cash only.
Book your accommodation ahead, especially in the May to November high season. Most Atauro places confirm over WhatsApp and can be slow to reply, and the best lodges fill up.
Pack water, snacks, sun protection, and a light layer. The ferries have little or no catering, and the daytime crossing is exposed to strong sun.
In the wet season seas are rougher and sailings can be cancelled, so build in a buffer day rather than booking a tight onward connection.
Flying home? The 15:00 boat reaches Dili around 17:15 on Berlin Nakroma or 18:00 on MV Success, too late for a flight to Darwin that day, so spend your last night in Dili. There is often no boat off Atauro on a Saturday morning either. To be in Dili earlier, ask your lodge about its boat or take the MAF flight back (Mon 08:10, Wed 10:40, Fri 17:10).
If the ferry does not run: MAF flies a light aircraft from Dili to Atauro (Mon 07:30, Wed 10:00, Fri 16:30, about 20 minutes, $80 one way; seats are few and can be bumped for a medical evacuation). Lodge boats run by Compass, Atauro Dive Resort and Beloi Beach Hotel cost about $70-$75 a person one way, and a private charter starts at about $200 an hour. Miss the return boat and you wait for the next sailing or pay for a lodge boat, so keep a buffer day before your flight.
Common Questions
What days does the ferry to Atauro run?
Every day except Monday. Success sails Tuesday and Friday, and Berlin Nakroma sails Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.
How much is the Dili to Atauro ferry?
$5 each way on Success and $4 each way on Berlin Nakroma, paid in cash at the port.
How long does the ferry take?
About 2 hours 15 minutes on Berlin Nakroma or 3 hours on MV Success. Both ferries leave Dili around 08:00 and depart Beloi, Atauro, around 15:00.
Can I do Atauro as a day trip?
Technically yes on any ferry day, but the 08:00 departure and 15:00 return leave only a few hours on the island. Stay one or two nights if you can.
Can I take the ferry back and fly home the same day?
Plan not to. The boat back reaches Dili in the early evening, too late for a same-day flight to Darwin, so spend your last night in Dili and fly the next day.
Is there a fast ferry to Atauro?
No. The Dragon Star fast ferry has been out of service since December 2025, so the two public ferries above are the way across, with the MAF flight and lodge boats as the backup.
Do I book the ferry online?
No. There is no online booking. Buy your ticket at the port on the day of travel, in US dollars, and arrive about an hour early.
