Diving paradise in the Coral Triangle
Atauro Island — Diving paradise in the Coral Triangle. Just 30km north of Dili, Atauro Island is home to the highest recorded marine biodiversity on Earth. The reefs are extraordinary and the island is peaceful — but it's still basic. 19 bookable experiences.
Hotels in Atauro IslandAtauro Island sits 30 kilometers north of Dili in the Wetar Strait, a deep channel between Timor and the volcanic islands to the north. The island is about 25km long, covering 140 square kilometers, with a mountainous interior rising to 995 meters at the peak of Mount Manucoco. Since January 2022, Atauro is its own municipality — separated from Dili.
In 2016, Conservation International's Rapid Assessment Program documented an average of 253 reef fish species per survey site around Atauro — the highest average ever recorded globally, surpassing Raja Ampat in Indonesia. A single site yielded 315 species. The total survey recorded 642 reef fish species. The nutrient-rich deep water upwellings from the Wetar Strait and Indonesian Throughflow create an ecosystem that supports everything from pygmy seahorses to whale sharks. Atauro is now an official candidate Whale Heritage Site and a designated Mission Blue Hope Spot.
The island is home to around 10,000-12,000 people across several villages, each with distinct traditions — predominantly Protestant, a legacy of Calvinist missionaries. Beloi on the east coast is the main hub and ferry port, with a lively Saturday market (smaller markets Tuesday and Thursday). Vila Maumeta is the administrative capital. Adara on the west coast, now accessible by a road completed in mid-2025 (~45 min drive from Beloi), offers spectacular sunsets and pristine reef. Life moves slowly — no ATMs, limited electricity, and a chronic freshwater shortage.
ATKOMA (Asosiasaun Turizmu Koleku Mahanak Ataúro) coordinates community-based tourism across the island. Key dive operators include Compass Diving (PADI 5-Star) and Atauro Dive Resort (PADI-accredited). Expect around $60 per dive with equipment. Marine reserves charge a $2 entry fee per person. A 2016 cetacean survey documented 2,287 individuals from 11 species, including blue whales, humpback whales, and superpods of up to 600 dolphins.
Atauro's reefs host the world's highest recorded marine biodiversity. Popular sites include Adara 1 and 2, the Whale Shark Wall, and Secret Garden. Visibility often exceeds 30 meters. Suitable for all levels — from discover scuba to advanced technical dives.
You don't need a dive cert to see the magic. House reefs at Atauro Dive Resort and along the coast at Beloi offer world-class snorkeling directly from shore. Turtles, reef sharks, and schools of trevally are common. The beach at Atecru is stunning — reachable by a 5.5-hour hike from Beloi or a $130 boat charter.
From mid-October through November, the Wetar Strait becomes a highway for migrating pygmy blue whales, sperm whales, and several dolphin species. Boat trips from Atauro offer some of the best cetacean encounters in Southeast Asia.
Walk between villages on mountain trails through dense forest. Visit Makili for traditional weaving, or hike to the summit of Manucoco for panoramic views. At Atecru, explore the 18,000-year-old Aleti-Tunu Bibi cave with rock art dating back 8,000 years. Akrema's white sand beach is 1.5 hours from Bikeli.
Explore Atauro's coastline by kayak or SUP. The calm western shore is ideal, with hidden coves, mangrove stands, and coral gardens visible through the crystal-clear water.
Join local fishermen for a traditional line-fishing trip, or arrange a sport fishing charter in the deep waters of the strait. Yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, and marlin are all present.
