  • Prices run from US$50 to US$1,888 per person, set by the operators themselves. Most need at least 2 or 3 travellers to run.
  • Island Explorer's 5-day tour of Dili, the Maubisse highlands, Lauhata beach and Baucau costs US$1,776 for two. The same route booked piece by piece, with a hired 4WD and driver, comes to about US$1,243 for two, without the meals, entrance fees and planning the package includes.
  • The longest drives are Dili to Balibo (3 hours 30 minutes) and Com back to Dili (7 hours), as Island Explorer plans them.
  • Best season for a road trip: the dry months, May to November. Roads to the highlands and the east get slow and slippery from December to April.

Not included: meals, entrance fees, a SIM card, the airport run on the last morning (a taxi is US$10 to US$15), and someone who has planned each day. One room for two at each stay's lowest listed rate; your dates may cost more. The package's beach night is at the resort it calls Lauhata Beach Resort. How much does a tour package in Timor-Leste cost?

Multi-day packages on Rezerva run from US$50 to US$1,888 per person, depending on length and party size. Overnight road trips, to Balibo, Maubisse, Mount Ramelau or Jaco, start at US$160 per person. A 5-day tour is US$888 to US$988 per person. The longest, 10 days, is US$1,888 per person. These are the operators' own prices, and none includes international flights.

Is it cheaper to travel Timor-Leste on my own?

Usually, if you count only the car, the driver and the rooms. Our worked example puts the 5-day highlands and Baucau route at about US$1,243 for two booked piece by piece, against US$1,776 for the package. The package adds meals at most stops, entrance fees, a SIM card, the airport transfer and a day-by-day plan from people who drive the route every week.

Do I need a driver in Timor-Leste?

You can self-drive: a 4WD costs US$120 to US$140 a day. Traffic drives on the left and cars are right-hand drive. Bring an International Driving Permit with your home licence. Most visitors hire a driver for anything beyond Dili, because the mountain roads are narrow and unsigned and conditions change after rain. A driver costs US$35 a day in Dili and US$55 a day outside it, on top of the car.

When is the best time for a tour of Timor-Leste?

The dry season, May to November. Highland mornings are clear and the roads east and into the mountains are at their best. From December to April rain slows the roads and can close the track to Hato Builico, so packages run but drive times stretch.

Can a solo traveller book these packages?

Most multi-day packages run from 2 or 3 travellers, and the price per person assumes that party. If you are travelling alone, send an enquiry from the package page: operators sometimes add a single traveller to another group, and our Join a Trip board lists departures that are open to sharing.

Do the packages include flights and visas?

No package includes international flights: you fly into Dili, under 2 hours from Darwin or Bali. Some include the airport transfer, a SIM card or the Atauro boat; each package page lists exactly what is and is not included. Check the entry rules in our visa guide before you book. Flights to Dili.
