Day-by-day plans for making the most of your trip
Most visitors to Timor-Leste have between 3 and 7 days. That's enough to see the highlights — but you'll need to be strategic. The country is mountainous, roads are slow, and the best experiences are spread across different regions.
These itineraries are based on what actually works: realistic drive times, experiences that are reliably available, and a pace that lets you enjoy the journey rather than rush through it.
Choose the itinerary that fits your time, then customize. Timor rewards flexibility — the best moments are often unplanned.
Day 1 — Dili. Arrive and settle in. Afternoon: walk along the waterfront to Cristo Rei, visit the Resistance Museum, and have dinner at a seafood restaurant on the coast. If you arrive early, a shore dive at K41 or Pertamina Pier is possible.
Day 2 — Atauro Island. Take the morning ferry (runs Sat/Tue/Thu only, 2.5 hours) or a speedboat charter (45 min). Spend the day diving or snorkeling Atauro's west coast reefs. Lunch at a local eco-lodge. Swim at Dollar Beach or Akrema. Return on the afternoon ferry or stay overnight for a more relaxed experience.
Day 3 — Dili. Morning: visit Tais Market for traditional textiles, explore the old Portuguese quarter. Afternoon: a coffee tasting at a specialty cafe, or a short drive to Areia Branca beach. Departure.
Day 1 — Dili. Arrive, explore the city. Cristo Rei walk, Resistance Museum, waterfront dinner.
Day 2 — Atauro Island. Ferry (Sat/Tue/Thu) in the morning. Diving or snorkeling. Stay overnight at a local eco-lodge or guesthouse on the island to enjoy sunset and stargazing.
Day 3 — Atauro → Dili → Maubisse. Morning snorkel or beach time. Ferry back to Dili. Drive to Maubisse (3 hours) through stunning mountain scenery. Arrive in Maubisse for a cool highland evening. Visit the historic Pousada (closed as accommodation but still a landmark) and stay at a local guesthouse ($10-20).
Day 4 — Ramelau Trek. Depart Maubisse at 2-3am. Drive to Hato Builico (1 hour). Trek to the summit (2-3 hours). Watch sunrise from 2,963m. Descend, return to Maubisse for coffee and breakfast. Optional: visit a nearby coffee farm. Drive back to Dili.
Day 5 — Dili. Relaxed morning. Tais Market, coffee shop visits, or a shore dive. Departure.
Day 1 — Dili. Arrive, explore the capital. Cristo Rei, Resistance Museum, waterfront sunset.
Day 2 — Dili → Maubisse. Drive to the highlands (3 hours). Stop at Aileu for views. Visit a coffee farm en route. Evening in Maubisse — visit the historic Pousada grounds, stay at a local guesthouse.
Day 3 — Ramelau + Coffee Country. Pre-dawn Ramelau trek. After descent, visit a coffee cooperative. Afternoon drive back to Dili (3 hours).
Day 4 — Atauro Island. Ferry to Atauro. Diving, snorkeling, beach time. Stay overnight.
Day 5 — Atauro → Dili → Baucau. Morning on Atauro. Return to Dili. Drive east along the coast to Baucau (2.5 hours). Visit the old Portuguese town, market, natural swimming pools.
Day 6 — Baucau → Com or Jaco. Drive to Com for beach and whale watching (in season), or continue to Tutuala for a boat to Jaco Island (allow extra time — the road is rough). This is the most remote and rewarding part of Timor.
Day 7 — Return to Dili. Long drive back (5-7 hours depending on route). Stop at viewpoints along the north coast. Evening in Dili before departure.
Day 1 — Dili. Arrive. Afternoon shore dive at K41 or Pertamina Pier.
Day 2 — Atauro Island. Speedboat to Atauro. 2 boat dives on the west coast (Secret Garden, Adara Wall). Stay overnight.
Day 3 — Atauro. Morning dive (whale shark wall or deep wall). Afternoon macro dive or snorkel. Night dive option.
Day 4 — Atauro. Morning dive. Afternoon free — beach, village walk, or rest. Ferry back to Dili.
Day 5 — Dili. Morning shore dive at Tasi Tolu (turtles, reef sharks). Pack and depart.
Drive times in Timor are unpredictable. Budget 50% more time than Google Maps suggests. Breakdowns, livestock, and road conditions all add time.
Book tours and transport in advance, especially in peak season (Jul-Sep). Operators have limited departures and small group sizes. This is not a destination where you can show up and figure it out.
Mix intensity with rest. A Ramelau trek followed by a 5-hour drive is exhausting. Plan recovery time — a beach day, a slow coffee morning, a quiet evening.
Be flexible. Weather, road closures, and boat cancellations happen. The best travelers in Timor are the ones who adapt gracefully.
