1Bring reef-safe sunscreen. The reefs are pristine, keep them that way.
2Cash only on the island. Bring enough USD for your entire stay plus a buffer.
3The ferry can be rough in the wet season (December to April) and in the June to September trade winds. Take seasickness medication if needed.
4March flies are a real nuisance: long pants recommended, especially near the coast.
5Bring a headlamp: electricity is limited and paths between lodges are dark at night.
6A new road to Adara (completed mid-2025) now allows a 45-minute drive from Beloi, opening up the stunning west coast.

Atauro is very safe. The main risks are sun exposure, reef cuts (wear reef shoes), and dehydration. March flies can be aggressive: wear long pants near the coast. There is a small health clinic in Beloi but no hospital: serious injuries require evacuation to Dili.
