One week in Timor-Leste: Dili & Atauro

A week is the sweet spot for a first visit — two nights in the capital for history and culture, three on Atauro for the reefs, and a mountain day if you want it. Here is the route most independent travellers take, with every stay and tour bookable direct.

The classic first-visit route

Follow it as written or lift the pieces you like — each day links straight to the stays and tours you can book on Rezerva.

  1. 1
    Dili

Land in Dili, sunset at Cristo Rei

Fly in from Darwin, Bali or Singapore and settle into the capital. Pick a base on the waterfront or near Timor Plaza, then walk the 570 steps up to the Cristo Rei statue for a first-evening view back over the bay — the classic Dili arrival.

  2. 2
    Dili

    Dili history & culture

Give the capital a full day: the Timorese Resistance Archive & Museum, the Santa Cruz cemetery, Arte Moris art centre, and the Tais Market for hand-woven textiles. A guided half-day makes the history land — most first-time visitors say the culture and the sites are the best part of the trip.

  3. 3
    Atauro

    Cross to Atauro Island

Take the morning ferry (or the fast boat) 25 km north across the Wetar Strait to Atauro. Check into an eco-lodge, beach bungalow or village homestay — stays run from about $15 a night up to all-inclusive dive resorts. Spend the afternoon on the reef right off the beach.

  4. 4
    Atauro

    Diving & snorkelling

Atauro holds the richest documented reef-fish biodiversity on Earth. Spend the day diving or snorkelling the wall sites straight off the island — PADI centres run boat trips and courses, and the snorkelling is world-class even from the shallows.

  5. 5
    Atauro

    Slow day on the island

A gentler day: walk to a fishing village, hike the ridge for the sunset, kayak the coast, or just read on the beach. Between roughly October and December, day boats also head out for whale and dolphin watching in the strait.

  6. 6
    Dili → mountains

Back to the mainland — Ramelau option

Return on the ferry. If you have the legs for it, drive up into the mountains to Maubisse and overnight below Mt Ramelau, Timor-Leste’s highest peak, for a pre-dawn climb to the summit sunrise. Prefer to stay put? Trade it for a coffee-country day trip or a lazy Dili beach afternoon.

    Last morning & departure

Ease into the last day: coffee on the waterfront, a final swim, and one more stop at the Tais Market for gifts before your airport transfer. Most visitors leave already planning the next trip.

Make it yours

Not quite your week?

Stretch it to ten days for Baucau and the east, shorten it to a long weekend of Dili and Atauro, or share the trip and split the costs with other travellers.
