Projeto Montanha — "The Mountain Project" — is a Timorese NGO-run guesthouse, restaurant, handicraft centre, music studio, woodwork shop, and dental clinic in Aileu, the highland coffee district about an hour south of Dili. The project's mission is to train local Timorese youth in hospitality, arts, music, woodwork, and languages (Portuguese and English), giving them skills they can take to Dili or beyond. The on-site Restaurante da Montanha serves homemade meals with ingredients grown in the project's own garden or sourced locally — comfort dishes like lasagne, steak, and fried chicken with fresh-squeezed juices. Guests have repeatedly named it one of the nicest places to stay in Timor-Leste, citing the homely atmosphere, excellent food, and warm service. Crafts made by students are sold in an on-site gift shop and at Dili airport, with proceeds returned to the youths who made them. A stay here directly supports the training programme.

The feeling when sitting at the patio area while the rain is pouring down is a feeling l I’ll never forget. Very good food and even better coffee. The desserts are really nice, and it is a must visit place when in Aileu.

My tour guide took us here. It was an unexpected oasis. Presented with care, style, and heart. The art on display adds to the mood, though it is a little predictable. The staff helped us through the menu so we could pick some lovely and fresh options for lunch. The fresh iced juices were delicious, and the pizzas were light and very tasty. I also had dessert, which was a Brazilian style fudge - stunning, and the coffee complemented it very well. The staff need praise, as they were great. I bought some jam to take home, and have just opened it. It was superb - with deep and intense fruit flavours of strawberry. I ate most of the jar immediately, it was that good.

There's no sign on the main road. Maybe it used to be there, but now it's none. It's hard for those who go alone couldn't find it. The food service is tbh is slow, just a simple dish tool, almost 30 minutes to make. Overall experience regarding the customer service and the ambiance is great.
