Getting to Atauro

Atauro is 25km north of Dili, accessible by ferry or light aircraft.

  • Public ferry

    Tuesday to Sunday (no Monday)

    Leaves Dili 08:00 · Leaves Atauro 15:00

    Berlin Nakroma ~2 hrs 15 min · MV Success ~3 hours

    Dili port: Porto Dili, Farol (Berlin Nakroma) · Kolmera, Dili (MV Success)

    Fares $4 to $5 one way. Tickets are sold for cash at the port on the day, so arrive early.

  • MAF light aircraft

    Monday 07:30, Wednesday 10:00 and Friday 16:30 · $80 one-way

    Flights back from Atauro leave Monday 08:10, Wednesday 10:40 and Friday 17:10.

    About 20 minutes from Dili. Book directly with MAF Timor-Leste, and reserve early because seats are limited.

  • Private boat

    $70-$75 per person one way

    Run by the lodges (Compass, Atauro Dive Resort, Beloi Beach Hotel). A private charter starts at about $200 an hour. Arrange it when you book.

No ferry sails on Monday, in either direction.

The public ferry back from Atauro reaches Dili in the early evening, too late for a same-day flight to Darwin. If you return by public ferry, plan your last night in Dili.

Spent a memorable two nights (US$25pp pn). Delicious food. Wonderful vegetarian options. Located straight West on the road from the port. Very helpful hosts. Negatives. No proper shower, just water and buckets. Also, no power from midnight to 6am, so be aware. Totally worth it though - hosts are wonderful.

The Yuli's Homestay is wonderful. They gave us free breakfast, which was really delicious. The family was very kind and helpful, and they are trying their best to make their guest stay enjoyable for them. They even suggested the local transportation, and they always took care if we need something or not. Their homestay was really clean, and the people were really nice. Definitely recommend them

Big recommendation! This is a wonderful place to stay - a lovely and welcoming family, big garden with lots of animals (puppies!), very clean and the best food (we are vegetarian and they cooked a variety of dishes with lots of veggies)! We even had power during the night, so with the provided fan it was a pleasant temperature in the bedroom. There is a shared western toilet, bucket shower and a small kitchen with a fridge, where you even could cook small meals if you want. We’ve got a free coconut every day and they provide coffee/tea also for free. A water dispenser is also there, you can refill your water bottle. Yuli and her family were incredible hosts. So kind and helpful. The food was always really good, fresh fish, squid, pasta, vegetables, rice, omelettes etc. let us use their moto to drive around the scenic views on the island and helped us wash our clothes and with the boat etc. couldn’t recommend enough. The room was big, comfortable, super clean, nice bathroom next door. super affordable with meals included. 5 mins walk to the beach. Thank you again Yuli.
