Discovering Dili
Today you meet the remarkable spirit of the Timorese people. At the Resistance Archive and Museum, letters, photographs and radio messages bring a 24-year struggle for freedom vividly to life. Continue to Chega!, a former prison turned powerful place of truth and reconciliation, and pause at Santa Cruz Cemetery, where the world first saw Timor's courage in 1991. End on a high at Cristo Rei, looking out over the peaceful, hopeful capital that resilience built.

Trade the beach for the mountains. The road twists up from Dili through the hills, with ever-wider views back over the city and the sea, then into the cool green coffee country of Aileu. Exploring Maubisse
A day of mountain adventures. Just south of Maubisse, follow a short trail to the Ersalibuti (Hakmatek) waterfall, plunging into a deep, refreshing pool. Then walk with a local guide to traditional Mambae villages, with their distinctive houses, terraced gardens and children waving from the doorways. Stop for coffee on a ridge with views across the peaks, and arrive back in Maubisse as the mist rolls in.
- Overnight: Sara Guest House, Maubisse

Dili to Balibo
Head west along a quiet coast road of grey-sand beaches and fishing villages, past Liquiçá and the old Portuguese fort at Maubara, where you can browse woven baskets made by local women. Near the border, the road turns uphill to Balibo, where tonight you sleep inside a 350-year-old hilltop fort with views to the sea.
- On the road: about 3 h 45 min
- Overnight: Balibo Fort Hotel, Balibo
7Day 7 · Mon, 30 Nov 2026
Balibo back to Dili
Visit Balibo, where five journalists from Australia, Britain and New Zealand lost their lives in 1975 while reporting the truth to the world. At the Balibo Flag House, now a community centre, see the Australian flag they painted on the wall, still faintly visible, and learn how their story became the film Balibo. It is a moving, unforgettable stop, softened by the warmth of today's community and views from the town's hilltop fort.
- On the road: about 3 h 45 min
- Overnight: Malinamoc, Dili
