Head out along the breathtaking north coast of Timor-Leste for a full day on the water in the Wetar Strait — one of the richest marine corridors in the region, with up to 26 species of whales and dolphins passing through.
You set out early with a small group of like-minded travellers (max 5) and an expert local guiding team who actively search for whales and dolphins every day, sharing what they know about the animals’ behaviour and the conservation of these waters.
The day balances thrill and discovery: search for megafauna, swim and snorkel when it’s safe, and relax over refreshments and lunch on a remote beach.

The day
- 7:30am · Pickup from Pousada de Baucau, transfer out to Watabu
- Into the Wetar Strait — searching for whales & dolphins
- Swim and snorkel sessions alongside marine life when it’s safe
- Refreshments and lunch on a remote beach
- Snorkel at Secret Beach — coral gardens and reef fish
- Return transfer to Pousada de Baucau (min. 6 hours on the water)
What to expect
- Possible sightings: spinner dolphins, melon-headed, pilot and sperm whales, and the mighty pygmy blue whale — plus, at times, manta rays, whale sharks and other megafauna.
- Wildlife is wild: no guarantee can be made on sightings or in-water interactions — they depend entirely on natural conditions.
- Swimming is subject to guide approval, safety conditions and individual ability.
- The expedition leader may adjust the day’s plan for safety, weather or the animals’ wellbeing.

Booking, payment & cancellation
- US$340 per person, including tax.
- Your card secures the booking — you’re only charged once the trip is confirmed.
- Bookings made within 30 days of departure require full payment at the time of booking.
- More than 60 days before departure: your booking may be transferable at the operator’s discretion.
- Between 30 and 60 days before departure: 50% of the total trip cost is charged.
- Within 30 days of departure: 100% cancellation fee (no refund).
- No refund for no-shows, or for missing any part or day of the expedition.
Good to know before you book
- Valid travel insurance is required — covering trip cancellation, medical expenses, emergency evacuation and adventure activities (including open-water swimming).
- You’ll be asked to disclose any medical conditions and to confirm you’re comfortable swimming in open water.
- The operator may restrict or deny water activities if safety concerns arise.
- This is a remote location — access to emergency, medical and evacuation support may be limited or delayed.
- Participation is undertaken at your own risk.
